About This Trip

As someone who has travelled to Sri Lanka and fallen in love with it every single time, it feels completely familiar the moment you land and yet somehow it still manages to surprise you with something you never saw coming.

That’s the thing about Sri Lanka that’s almost impossible to explain until you’ve experienced it. It’s our neighbour. Same subcontinent, shared heritage, food that feels like a coastal cousin of everything we grew up eating. The locals look at you like they’ve been waiting for you — not in the transactional way of a tourist destination, but in the way of people who genuinely consider you family.

Tiny mountain towns wrapped in mist and tea plantations. Jungle safaris so wild and open they feel more East Africa than South Asia. A train ride through the hill country that belongs on every list of the world’s great rail journeys. Ancient rock fortresses. UNESCO colonial forts. And the southern coast — Mirissa, Bentota — which has a sundowner scene, a surf culture and a beach energy that genuinely rivals Bali.

Eight days. One island. Everything you’re looking for in a holiday and at least three things you weren’t expecting.

Day by Day

The Itinerary

Eight days. Surf, safaris, hill country trains, ancient rocks, and memories you won’t stop talking about.

  • 01

    Day 1 — August 8

    The Island Clocks In

Land in Colombo, check in, and let the island find you. Galle Face waterfront to soak in the city, then rooftop bars, good food and Colombo’s after-dark energy to kick things off.

    Overnight: Colombo

✦ First evening on a Colombo rooftop — city below, ocean ahead, eight days of Sri Lanka still in front of you
  • 02

    Day 2 — August 9

    The Rock Nobody Talks About

Drive to Sigiriya through coconut groves and paddy fields. Skip the crowds — today we climb Pidurangala Rock at sunset for the view looking directly down onto Lion Rock that most tourists completely miss.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

✦ Lion Rock at golden hour from Pidurangala’s summit. The view everyone should see and almost nobody does
  • 03

    Day 3 — August 10

Trains, Tea & the Most Scenic Glow-Up in Asia

Optional 5am alarm for the Sigiriya Lion Rock sunrise hike. Then the journey into hill country — a short scenic train ride through misty tea plantations, a stop at Nine Arches Bridge, and arrival in Ella by evening.

    Overnight: Ella

✦ Leaning out that train window. You’ll know the exact moment
  • 04

    Day 4 — August 11

    Ella Fully Explored

Ravana Falls, hidden jungle waterfalls that require a scramble to reach, and Little Adam’s Peak at golden hour with the whole hill country valley laid out below. Evening café hopping — kottu roti, string hoppers, good tea, better conversations.

    Overnight: Ella

✦ Little Adam’s Peak at golden hour — the whole valley going gold below you, tea estates in every direction
  • 05

    Day 5 — August 12

Jeeps, Elephants & a Night to Remember

Drive to Mirissa via a proper open-jeep wildlife safari through Udawalawe National Park — elephants, leopards, golden light, the kind of safari that makes you forget you’re on a beach holiday. Evening in Mirissa, party at The Doctors House.

    Overnight: Mirissa

✦ Elephants at golden hour in Udawalawe, followed by a Sri Lanka-style night
  • 06

    Day 6 — August 13

    Salt, Sun & Southern Vibes

Morning surf lesson on one of Sri Lanka’s best beginner breaks — nobody leaves without standing up at least once. Secret beach, Coconut Hill for sundowners, and a southern coast evening that rivals Bali.

    Overnight: Mirissa

✦ First wave in the morning, a secret beach by noon, a sundowner on the southern coast by evening
  • 07

    Day 7 — August 14

Forts, Rivers & One Last Sunset

Walk the ramparts of Galle Fort — UNESCO colonial architecture, cobblestone lanes, excellent coffee. Then north to Bentota via the Madu River mangrove safari and a turtle hatchery visit at golden hour.

    Overnight: Bentota

✦ Galle Fort in the afternoon light, a mangrove river at dusk and baby turtles heading for the ocean
  • 08

    Day 8 — August 15

    That’s a Wrap

Transfer to Colombo Airport. Seven days, one island. Good vibes only.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Indians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival. It’s fully online, takes about 15 minutes and is free of cost. Head to eta.immigration.gov.lk, fill in your details and receive approval within 24 hours. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity from your date of travel.
Expect tropical rains on western and southern coasts, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. The hill country around Ella is lush and dramatic in the rain. The cultural triangle around Sigiriya is largely unaffected. Pack a light rain jacket — Sri Lanka in the green season has a beauty the dry season simply can’t replicate.
The scenic train through Sri Lanka’s hill country is on the itinerary, but train tickets are subject to availability and not included in the base price. If you want to secure a seat in advance, let us know when you book. What we can guarantee is that you’ll be on that route, through that scenery, one way or another.
More than okay. Sri Lankan cuisine is genuinely one of the best destinations in Asia for vegetarians. Dhal curry, jackfruit preparations, coconut sambol, vegetable kottu, string hoppers — the food is naturally built around coconut, lentils and vegetables in ways that are deeply flavourful without needing meat. You will eat extremely well.
A mix of both. Cards are widely accepted in Colombo, Galle and most hotels. Once in Ella or smaller towns, cash becomes more useful. Withdraw Sri Lankan Rupees in Colombo or Galle when you have the chance. Keep the equivalent of ₹3,000–5,000 in local currency handy at all times for meals, tips and incidentals.
Good across most of the trip. Sri Lanka has solid mobile coverage in Colombo, Sigiriya, Mirissa, Galle and Bentota. Ella can be slightly patchy depending on your network but most hotels have WiFi. Pick up a local SIM at Colombo Airport on arrival for the best coverage throughout.
Yes. Sri Lanka is a well-established, welcoming travel destination with genuinely warm local culture. The infrastructure for travellers is solid throughout the route we’re covering. Standard common sense applies as it does anywhere, but there is nothing about Sri Lanka that should give you pause.
No — same answer as every PTT group trip. The itinerary is sequenced the way it is for a reason and changing one element creates a ripple effect for the whole group. If you want something fully tailored, we do private custom trips. If you’re on this one, just trust the process. The people who always do are always glad they did.
Because most Sri Lanka itineraries give you Sigiriya Lion Rock and call it a day. We give you Pidurangala at sunset — the view that looks directly down onto Lion Rock that most tourists completely miss. Because Udawalawe is one of Asia’s great safari experiences and most beach-focused trips skip it entirely. Because there’s only one PTT trip leader on the ground with you every single day, not a series of local handoffs.
