The Itinerary

Seven days, highlands first and the coast last, with midnight on the Indian Ocean.

01

The Island Clocks In

Noon arrival, and Sri Lanka wastes no time. Christmas week here is warm, alive and nothing like the shut-down holiday of mainland Europe — Colombo is dressed up, the restaurants are full and the streets have that particular holiday electricity.

First stop, Galle Face Green: the long seafront promenade where the whole city comes to exhale, with kites, street food and the Indian Ocean doing its thing. Evening is Colombo after dark — rooftop bars with city and ocean views and Sri Lankan food that will reframe everything you thought you knew about the cuisine.

Highlight of the Day: First evening in Colombo — city below, ocean ahead, seven days of Sri Lanka still in front of you.

🌙 Overnight: Colombo
02

Into the Highlands

Drive east and up as Colombo gives way to the central highlands. Tea estates appear on the hillsides, the air cools noticeably and the whole country shifts into a different gear.

Laxapana Falls sits at 126 metres, one of the highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, reached by a hike through forest and mist that earns the view properly. For those who want to go further, abseiling down the face of the falls is available as an optional experience. Hatton by evening — a small highland town most itineraries drive straight past. Dinner, warmth and the hills outside the window.

Highlight of the Day: Standing at the base of Laxapana Falls after the hike up — the water thundering above, the mist everywhere.

🌙 Overnight: Hatton
03

Tea, Temples & the Train

The most scenic day of the trip. Morning in Nuwara Eliya starts at a working tea estate where the journey from leaf to cup happens right in front of you, then Seetha Amman Kovil (Sitamma temple), a colourful Hindu temple tucked into the hills and traditionally associated with the Ramayana.

Then on to Ella. For those who want it, the optional scenic train from Nanu Oya through tea country is one of the great rail journeys in Asia (a roughly 4-hour ride, subject to availability). On the way, Nine Arches Bridge, a British-built stone viaduct in the jungle, best seen the local way: by tuk-tuk. Arrive in Ella by evening — a tiny mountain town with big energy. Golden-hour walk up Little Adam’s Peak if the light is right, or straight into café-hopping down the main strip.

Highlight of the Day: Leaning out that train window. You’ll know the exact moment.

🌙 Overnight: Ella
04

Jeeps, Elephants & the Coast Ahead

Today has range. Breakfast, then out of Ella’s cool air with a stop at Ravana Falls before the landscape shifts from tea estates to dry scrub. En route, the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, where rescued and orphaned young elephants are rehabilitated before release — a quieter, more emotional stop before the main event.

Then an open-jeep safari through Udawalawe National Park by afternoon, with herds of elephants moving through the scrub in golden light. Then the coast: Mirissa appearing ahead as the sun drops and the air turns salty and warm. Check in and let the southern coast settle around you.

Highlight of the Day: Elephants at golden hour in Udawalawe. Africa-level safari in South Asia.

🌙 Overnight: Mirissa
05

The Last Day of the Year

New Year’s Eve in Mirissa on the southern coast. If yesterday had range, today has only one setting: beach, full volume. If you’re up for it, a beginner surf lesson on one of the best learn-to-surf breaks in Sri Lanka — nobody leaves without standing up at least once.

Then a secret beach you can swing from the palm trees, and Coconut Hill for the views and the inevitable photoshoot. The evening builds and midnight arrives with the Indian Ocean ahead, fireworks somewhere behind you and the whole group together welcoming 2027.

Highlight of the Day: Midnight on the southern coast. 2027 arriving with the Indian Ocean in front of you and everyone around you.

🌙 Overnight: Mirissa
06

The First Day of 2027

Happy New Year. Check out of Mirissa and drive up the southwestern coast to Galle, where the ocean is right outside the window the whole way. Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site of 17th century Dutch colonial architecture, cobblestone lanes, coffee shops, boutique galleries and a lovely bookstore. Walk the ramparts, find a lunch spot with fort and ocean views and get happily lost.

After lunch, drive north to Bentota with a Madu River boat safari on the way — mangrove tunnels so dense they block out the sky, monitor lizards and kingfishers. As the light goes golden, a visit to the turtle hatchery, then a final dinner in Bentota.

Highlight of the Day: Baby turtles heading into the ocean on the first day of 2027. Sri Lanka’s final act does not phone it in.

🌙 Overnight: Bentota
07

That’s a Wrap

Transfer to Colombo Airport. Seven days, one island, good vibes only. Sri Lanka will take a while to leave you.

Frequently Asked

Indians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival. It’s straightforward, fully online and takes about 15 minutes to apply for. Head to eta.immigration.gov.lk, fill in your details and you’ll receive approval via email, typically within 24 hours. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity from your date of travel.
Late December is one of the best times to visit the western and southern coast of Sri Lanka — dry season, clear skies and warm temperatures around 28–32°C. The hill country around Hatton, Nuwara Eliya and Ella is cooler — expect 15–22°C with crisp evenings and occasional mist in the mornings. Pack light clothes for the coast and one warm layer for the highlands. Sri Lanka in late December is genuinely excellent timing and not accidental.
The scenic train through Sri Lanka’s hill country is one of the most extraordinary rail journeys in Asia and it is absolutely on the itinerary. However, and we’re being upfront about this — train tickets in Sri Lanka are subject to availability and are not included in the base trip cost. If you want to secure a seat in advance, let us know when you book and we’ll do our best to sort it for you. What we can guarantee is that you’ll be on that route, through that scenery, one way or another.
More than okay. Sri Lankan cuisine is genuinely one of the best in Asia for vegetarians — the food is naturally built around coconut, lentils, vegetables and rice in ways that are deeply flavourful without needing meat. Dhal curry, jackfruit preparations, coconut sambol, vegetable kottu, string hoppers — you will eat extremely well.
A mix of both works best. Cards are widely accepted in Colombo, Galle and most hotels and restaurants throughout the trip. Once you’re in Ella or smaller towns, cash becomes more useful — ATMs are available but not always reliable, so we recommend withdrawing Sri Lankan Rupees in Colombo or Galle when you have the chance. Keep the equivalent of about ₹3,000–5,000 in local currency handy at all times for meals, tips and incidentals.
Good across most of the trip. Sri Lanka has solid mobile coverage in Colombo, Mirissa, Galle and Bentota. Ella can be slightly patchy depending on your network, but most hotels have WiFi. Pick up a local SIM at Colombo Airport on arrival for the best coverage — they’re cheap, easy to set up and will serve you well for the entire trip.
Yes — Sri Lanka is a well-established, welcoming travel destination with a warm and genuinely hospitable local culture. The country has been fully open to tourism and the infrastructure for travellers is solid throughout the route we’re covering. Standard common sense applies as it does anywhere, but there is nothing about Sri Lanka that should give you pause. If anything, the locals will make you feel more looked after than you expected.
The hike to Laxapana Falls is moderately challenging — a trail through forest and highland terrain that takes around 45 minutes to an hour at a comfortable pace. Good walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness is all you need. The optional abseiling requires no prior experience — full equipment and a trained guide are provided. If you can handle a moderate hike you are completely fine for everything on this itinerary.
No — same answer as every PTT group trip. The itinerary is sequenced the way it is for a reason and changing one element creates a ripple effect for the whole group. If you want something fully tailored, we do private custom trips. If you’re on this one, just trust the process. The people who always do are always glad they did.
Message us on WhatsApp. We’ll send you a booking form and payment link. Your spot is confirmed with a $199 booking amount — the balance is due closer to departure. Spots are limited and go on a first-come, first-served basis.
Because most Sri Lanka New Year trips put you on the beach from Day 1 and call it done. This one builds — highlands to waterfall to hill country train to wildlife safari to the southern coast for New Year’s Eve. Every day is distinctly different from the one before it and the whole thing lands in Mirissa on December 31st having actually earned the celebration. An optional abseil down a waterfall that most operators don’t know exists. A tea estate and a temple in the Nuwara Eliya hills that nobody puts on their itinerary. A trip leader who is actually there with you every day rather than handing you off at every stop. And a New Year’s Eve on the southern coast of Sri Lanka that starts with surf and ends with midnight on the Indian Ocean. That’s the PTT difference.
