Highlights

Big 5 · Whale Festival · Garden Route

The Itinerary

Eleven days. Joburg to Cape Town — safaris, ancient caves, coastal roads, whales, and a finale the city was built to deliver.

01

Wheels Down, Pilanesberg Bound

Land in Johannesburg before 12:00PM, clear immigration and hit the road. Pilanesberg is two hours northwest of OR Tambo — that's exactly where we're headed. The drive out of Joburg is your first introduction to the South African landscape: flat, wide, enormous sky. The kind of scale that reminds you immediately you're on a different continent.

🌙 Overnight: Pilanesberg
02

Big 5 at Dawn & Predators Up Close

Early alarm. No negotiation. The Pilanesberg game drive happens at dawn — lions returning from a night hunt, elephants moving between water sources, rhinos grazing in the early mist. Open jeep, golden light, binoculars out. Then drive to Ukutula Lion Reserve — a fully ethical conservatory where the predator tour takes you up close with apex predators on their own terms. Optional lion walk available for the brave; book in advance.

🌙 Overnight: Johannesburg
03

Fly, Land, Garden Route

Morning domestic flight from Johannesburg to George. The descent gives you your first glimpse of the Indian Ocean — the trip shifts gears entirely. From the airport, pick up the Garden Route: the N2 hugs the coastline through lagoons, indigenous forest, and dramatic headlands. Windows down, no rush. End the day in Knysna — a turquoise lagoon town tucked between forested hills and the sea.

🌙 Overnight: Knysna
04

The Adventure Day — Tsitsikamma

Drive east to Tsitsikamma National Park — where ancient forest, dramatic coastline and the Indian Ocean collide. The Storms River lilo and kayaking experience puts you directly inside the gorge: canyon walls rising on both sides, cold clear water, the ocean appearing ahead. Then — Bloukrans Bridge. World's highest commercial bungee at 216 metres. Entirely your call. You already know if you're jumping.

🌙 Overnight: Wilderness
05

Underground & Oversized

Day trip inland through the Outeniqua Mountains into the wide-open Karoo. First stop: the Cango Caves — cathedral-sized stalactite chambers built over millions of years, buried beneath the Swartberg Mountains. Then the ostrich farm. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world and a working farm visit is exactly as chaotic and entertaining as it sounds. Expert advice: save your fingers.

🌙 Overnight: Wilderness
06

Ziplines, History & The Town Time Forgot

Drive west along the Indian Ocean to Mossel Bay — a historic harbour town with sweeping coastal views and the longest over-ocean zipline if anyone's interested. Then drive inland to Swellendam: the third oldest town in South Africa, established in 1745, with wide oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch homesteads nearly three centuries old, and a mountain backdrop so close it feels within reach. Most itineraries drive straight through without stopping. We sleep here tonight.

🌙 Overnight: Swellendam
07

Mountains, Sharks & The Southern Coast

Morning hike in Marloth Nature Reserve — fynbos-covered slopes, mountain trails, Langeberg viewpoints that most Garden Route travellers never know exist. Then drive to Gansbaai for optional shark cage diving — a Great White materialising out of the deep blue outside the cage is one of the most viscerally alive moments on the entire trip. Continue to Hermanus, South Africa's whale watching capital, perched on a clifftop above Walker Bay.

🌙 Overnight: Hermanus
08

Whale Festival Day & PTT Secret Experience

The Hermanus Whale Festival: the town transforms completely — live music spilling onto clifftops, food stalls running the waterfront, southern right whales breaching in Walker Bay below. One of the most celebrated wildlife festivals in the world, timed precisely because we planned around it. Afternoon: the PTT Secret Experience awaits in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley just outside Hermanus. That's all we're saying. 🤧

🌙 Overnight: Hermanus
09

The Peninsula & The Penguins

Drive the Cape Peninsula — Atlantic on one side, dramatic mountain ridges on the other. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope: the southwestern tip of Africa, where two oceans have collided since before anyone was around to name them. Then Boulders Beach, where a colony of African penguins has decided to make their permanent home, waddling around with complete indifference to the humans who show up daily to watch them.

🌙 Overnight: Simon's Town
10

Cape Town — The Finale

Drive up from Simon's Town and the city reveals itself gradually — Table Mountain first, then the Atlantic Seaboard, then the bowl of the city opening up below it. Cape Town is one of the great cities of the world and it knows it. Bo-Kaap in the morning, Table Mountain cable car at sunset — not midday, because sunset is when it earns every superlative. Then Cape Town after dark. The whole group together one last time. Stay out. Make it count.

🌙 Overnight: Cape Town
11

That's a Wrap. Or Is It?

Transfer to Cape Town International Airport and fly home with ten days of South Africa sitting somewhere permanently within you. Or don't. For those who want one more day, Cape Town has a very compelling case — skydiving over the Peninsula with Table Mountain and both oceans below you is, by any measure, an absurd and brilliant way to extend a trip. Our trip leader never leaves without at least two extra days. Make of that what you will.

Frequently Asked

Good news — the process just got significantly easier. Indian passport holders can now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or eVisa completely online — no embassy visits, no VFS queues, no sticker in your passport. The visa fee is currently waived for Indian citizens for short-term tourism visits. Make sure your passport has at least one blank page and six months validity. PTT will share the exact application link and a step-by-step guide with all confirmed travellers.
Fly into OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (JNB) — well connected from Mumbai via Kenya Airways and Etihad with one stop. The trip ends in Cape Town (CPT) so book a one-way in and one-way out. International flights are not included. The domestic flight from Johannesburg to George on Day 3 is also excluded — bookable on MakeMyTrip, Skyscanner or directly with FlySafair.
About as good as it gets. Late September to early October is spring in South Africa — the Western Cape is coming out of winter, the Garden Route is lush and green, temperatures are mild and pleasant, and southern right whales are in peak calving season in Hermanus. You're travelling in one of the best windows of the entire year and that is not an accident. The coast can get windy; carry at least one jacket or windbreaker.
South Africa is best experienced as a group — and there's a reason PTT keeps this small. Johannesburg has a reputation that sounds worse than the reality when you're with people who know how to move through it. The Garden Route — Knysna, Wilderness, Hermanus, Simon's Town, Cape Town — is genuinely one of the safest stretches of coastline in Africa. Common sense applies everywhere: avoid wandering alone at night, keep valuables sensibly, travel as a group. Beyond that, South Africa is warm and hospitable.
General good health is all this trip asks for. The Marloth hike is a manageable morning trail, the Cape Peninsula walks are easy and scenic, and game drives are spent watching Africa happen in front of you from a jeep. The Cango Caves adventure route involves some crawling through narrow passages if you opt for it, but the standard tour is completely accessible. If you can walk a few hours comfortably, you're more than good.
South Africa is one of the most cashless-friendly countries you'll travel to — cards accepted practically everywhere, from petrol stations to safari lodges. Visa and Mastercard work seamlessly throughout. Carry a small amount of South African Rand for tips, the occasional market stall and small incidentals. ATMs are widely available in all the towns on the itinerary. Easier than most destinations.
Good throughout. South Africa has solid mobile coverage across Johannesburg, the Garden Route towns, Hermanus and Cape Town. Wilderness and some more remote Garden Route stretches can be slightly patchy but nothing dramatic. A local SIM is easy and cheap to pick up at the airport.
No — same answer as every PTT group trip. This itinerary is built around specific timing — the Whale Festival, the spring season window, the whale calving peak. Changing one element affects the whole group and the logistics locked in months in advance. If you want something tailored, we do private custom trips. If you're on this one — trust the plan completely.
Message us on WhatsApp. We'll send you a booking form and payment link. Your spot is confirmed with a $199 booking amount — the balance is due closer to departure. Spots are limited and go on a first-come, first-served basis.
Because most South Africa itineraries either rush through Cape Town and a single safari or go so broad they do nothing properly. This one covers the full country — Joburg to Cape Town, top to bottom — at a pace that lets you actually feel each place. Table Mountain cable car included when most operators skip it. Overnight in Knysna and Wilderness because those towns deserve more than a lunch stop. Timed specifically around the Hermanus Whale Festival. And a PTT Secret Experience in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley because some things are worth planning months in advance.
