Why We're Doing This

Some trips become memories. A few quietly change the way you see the world. This is one of those places for us.

We first visited Masinagudi back in 2018 — no grand plan, no fancy cameras, no itinerary, just a road trip into the forests for a weekend. Somewhere between long conversations, roadside chai and deer crossing the road, something shifted. It's one of the trips that shaped our love for travel — the best adventures aren't always thousands of kilometres away, sometimes they're just one good road trip from home.

So we're bringing it to PTT. We've picked one of our favourite forest stays, right on the edge of an elephant corridor where wildlife occasionally wanders through the property itself. We'll drive through the forests of Bandipur and Masinagudi on what is easily one of the most beautiful road trips in South India, head into the hills on an off-road gypsy trail most visitors never get to experience, wake up before sunrise for a safari inside Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, meet the elephants at Theppakadu, and stop at the stunning Himavad Gopalaswamy Temple floating above the forests before a proper Mysuru food stop on the way home.

The best part? It all happens over a weekend. No flights. No leave applications. No complicated planning. Just pack a small bag on Friday night, and by Saturday morning you'll be trading Bangalore traffic for misty forests, fresh mountain air, and hopefully a few elephants casually strolling past.

The Itinerary

Two days. Bangalore to Masinagudi and back — forests, safaris, off-road trails, and a temple above the clouds.

01

Into The Jungle

Early morning start from Bangalore, hitting the road before the city properly wakes up. The drive itself is half the reason we're doing this trip — through Mysuru, into Bandipur and eventually the forests of Masinagudi, easily one of the most beautiful road trips in South India. Keep your eyes outside the window: elephants, deer, peacocks and the occasional gaur are regulars along this stretch. Wildlife spotting sometimes starts long before the safari does.

We'll reach our forest stay by afternoon, grab lunch and slow things down for a bit. The property sits right on an elephant corridor with a watering hole that's often visited by wildlife. Come evening, we swap the roads for rugged 4x4 gypsies and head into the Nilgiri foothills — muddy trails, mist rolling over the hills, and viewpoints you simply can't reach in a normal vehicle. Back to the resort for dinner, stories and a night of getting to know the group.

Highlight of the Day

Driving through Bandipur with wildlife around every corner, and watching the Nilgiris disappear into the monsoon mist.

02

Before The Jungle Wakes Up

Early morning. We head into Mudumalai Tiger Reserve just as the forest begins to wake up — this is when the park is at its best, mist hanging over the trees, birds going absolutely mental and wildlife slowly beginning to move around. Elephants, deer, gaur, langurs, and if the jungle gods are feeling generous… maybe even a tiger.

After the safari, we stop by Theppakadu Elephant Camp, one of India's oldest elephant camps, before heading back to the resort for breakfast. Freshen up, check out, and begin the drive back towards Bangalore. One last stop before we call it a weekend — Himavad Gopalaswamy Temple, sitting high above the forests and often surrounded by clouds during the monsoon, with unreal views over Bandipur. Then a customary Mysuru food stop — legendary dosas, a strong filter coffee, maybe a sweet treat — before one final nap in the tempo on the way home.

Highlight of the Day

Watching the forest come alive at sunrise, and ending the weekend above the clouds at Himavad Gopalaswamy Temple.

What To Pack

Keep it simple — this is a weekend, not an expedition.

Small backpack Comfortable clothes Light jacket Rainwear / poncho Footwear you don't mind getting muddy Reusable water bottle Sunscreen Sunglasses Power bank Personal medicines Camera, if you're into wildlife photography

Frequently Asked

Short answer? Probably not. Mudumalai is a tiger reserve, but that's exactly why they're wild — if someone could guarantee tiger sightings, they'd probably be the richest person in India. What you can expect is an incredibly beautiful forest and a very good chance of spotting elephants, gaur, deer, peacocks, langurs and plenty of other wildlife. If a tiger does decide to make an appearance, consider yourself extremely lucky.
Exactly how we'd want it. August is peak monsoon in the Nilgiris, which means lush green forests, mist rolling over the hills, and cooler temperatures compared to Bangalore. Expect occasional rain, so carry a rain jacket or poncho and footwear you don't mind getting a little muddy.
Not much at all. This isn't a trekking trip — if you're comfortable sitting through a road trip and hopping in and out of vehicles a few times, you're good to go.
Absolutely. A huge chunk of our travellers join solo, and weekend trips are honestly one of the easiest ways to meet like-minded people. You won't stay solo for very long.
Keep it simple — a small backpack, comfortable clothes, a light jacket, rainwear, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, a power bank, any personal medicines, and a camera if you're into wildlife photography.
Of course. We'll stop whenever needed for washrooms, chai and food. Nobody's suffering through a long drive because they're too awkward to ask.
Because this isn't just another weekend getaway picked off Google Maps. Masinagudi is one of the places that made us fall in love with travelling in the first place, and we've always wanted to bring it to PTT. Just a beautiful road trip, a genuinely lovely forest stay, some incredible wildlife experiences, and a weekend that reminds you how good it feels to disconnect for a couple of days. Pack light. Leave the stress behind. We'll take care of the rest.
